Make your house a home

As an interior decorator and future interior designer, I have learned a few factors that have an effect on how to make yourself feel at home. One of the most relevant experiences that have helped shape this knowledge has been the numerous times that my family has had to move, and that I honestly do not remember an occasion where I was living uncomfortably or where I was unsatisfied with the place that I was currently living in. Houses, apartments, even small studios, I have learned how to make myself feel at home, and I am not even talking about luxurious accessories nor spacious areas where I could modify any room as I pleased; I am talking about finding my own style, and incorporating it into any space that I was practically obligated to live at. “How did I find such style?” We can discuss that first.

To find your own personal brand means to explore all the areas in your life that matter the most to you. Here it’s a list of the aspects that you must consider before making any changes to your actual “habitat”:

1.     Purposes of each room. In my opinion, I believe that the idea that the bedroom has to be mainly utilized as a “sleeping area” and that the kitchen is uniquely a “cooking area” (etc.), is a complete myth, especially today. Our living spaces can be designed to serve many other purposes beyond the traditional concept of a home. I do know that since many professionals nowadays are able to work from home, our houses cannot revolve uniquely around our time away from the office; however, it is simpler—and healthier—to just separate them both and to conquer them independently from each other. For example, if you do have to share your own bedroom with your office, then it is important to take into consideration that there comes a time in the day when you have to get out of work, and have some quality “me-time” for yourself. Once we all can understand that, then having your office in your bedroom can be the perfect chance to use our imagination and create a very original and functional space. Remember to not limit yourself to a sofa bed or futon, since if you are not loving the idea of neither of those, the accommodation of your bed and the aid of distinct organizers and wall shelves can solve the problem of the “lack of space”. It is all about your wants and needs, so start brainstorming with lists and conceptual maps to identify the purpose of each room (or your desired divisions) in your living space.

2.    Hobbies. Two questions: 1) “What do you love doing the most?” 2) “Do you already have a place to perform these activities?” If your answer to number two was negative, then that means that we have to do our best to incorporate a way for those activities in your home. Yes, I do understand that if you like working out, it is not always possible to build your own fitness center in your house, but that doesn’t mean that you cannot have a little bit of everything. For example, if you enjoy lifting weights, then you can have a small weight rack in a corner of your patio, or what about using a simple dining room chair instead of a ballet barre, or the typical “doorway push”? Being able to do the things you love on a daily basis makes you enjoy your lifestyle and the spaces around you, and it gets even better when you can do them all while using everyday objects that are already in your home.

3.     Color scheme. When we think of our ideal home, we all have a colorful idea in mind. Even if we are planning on decorating according to an extremely minimalistic style, we still need a color scheme, and we know that even if our predominant color must be a muted beige for us to feel at home, we already have a color scheme in mind that would go with our favorite accessories and furniture. That’s just how it works! If you are planning on hiring an interior designer to decorate your house, he/she can probably guide you towards the best selection of hues possible according to the color scheme ideas that you provide, however, I would definitely have at least a thought to the direction that you would like to strive for. Remember that we’re talking about YOUR home, and what a professional could find really appealing might not necessarily be your type of style.

4.     Make it your own! There is nothing more representative of a home than those little details such as that picture of your grandparents when they got married, or the drawing that your child did at school. Your guests would like to see symbols of you as who you truly are, and the fact of putting them both on frames do not take the elegance nor the style that you are trying to achieve through your home. On the contrary, they help you adopt that style to make it your own, which should be your main goal at the moment of decorating your residence.

5.     Vibes. The question here is: What would you prefer others to see and feel when entering your home? This matter has everything to do with your common background music (if any), the arrangement of furniture, your favorite fragrance for your house, and even pets! It is about your personality and typical behaviors on a daily basis, and that is an aspect about your style that you have total control on.

Once you define each of these factors, you will have a final outcome leading you towards your ideal home! And remember, any space can become our “perfect house” when planning accordingly and setting our daily home improvement goals.
